About the Artist
MP “Mike” Raymond is a self-taught artist specializing in photo realism. He is a resident of central Massachusetts and currently resides in Southbridge, MA, where he has an in house studio. MP is a master at his craft, whether it is a portrait, landscape, or fantasy world. His comprehensive works using graphite are absolutely stunning and realistic. His works with oils are tremendous, as he routinely “captures a moment in time”. When people see his work for the 1st time, they are stunned at his intricate style and composition. Many times, people think his work is an actual photo that is transferred to a canvas. The subject matter, his fine detail, and his artistic eye create works that are like no other. Having sold works all over the globe, and endorsed by Blick Art Supply, MP has a faithful following.
A truly gifted artist, MP has also ventured into the world of sculpting and hand painting busts of various subject matter. His comparison to air brushing is not even close. He is a master at any fine art that he works on.
Mike has been in many galleries over the years, winning Best Oil Painting in show at several shows in the Portland, ME area. Several of his paintings have been chosen to be exhibited in The Guild of Boston Artists annual juried non-member shows.
I look for balance and depth of composition in all my work. I try to celebrate symmetry and strength through subtleness. The subject alone is never my first thought when it comes to choosing what I'm going to paint. What's most important to me is that the composition should evoke an emotional response, and that it embodies all aspects of great design. Once I've decided to proceed with a painting, my next step is to begin with a concept drawing, using several reference photographs. I then produce a final drawing on canvas. From this point I begin an underpainting using a specific technique I have developed. By applying thin layers of oil pigment, I slowly build up the painting. I feel this approach gives the subject matter a transparent, luminous effect that I believe becomes very apparent in both portraits and landscapes.
