About the ArtistNadia Lee is a fine artist and an elementary and middle school visual arts teacher with Denver Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Science in Photojournalism from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. After moving to Colorado in 2000, Nadia participated in various art shows, having her first solo show in September 2003, The Colorado Arts Festival May 2004, and The Copper Mountain Arts Festival, in September 2004. In 2006 Nadia attended The University of Denver in 2006 and obtained her Teacher Education certification in K-12 Art in May 2007. Her painted works focus on the human form and images from the natural world within a push/pull and collaged background.
Artist StatementWhen discussing her creations and artistic process, Nadia explains:
My work is symbolic of what is going on in my life as well as the life around me, a constant search for the best way to interpret the ideas about the world in which I live. I define my work as abstract naturalism because it is based on the beauty and wonder I find in the natural world. There is a layered meaning to my paintings of intimate and natural forms. Currently, I draw inspiration from the spirit, culture, people, artists, writings, and soul of nature itself. When I begin a piece, I start with an inspiring image from nature or the human form and develop a rough sketch of the final creation. I enjoy the process of developing a final composition, discovering the final placement of images within the building of the background. Watching a rough concept evolve to ultimately take on a completely different form, as a finished work is always surprising. It is exciting to explore the use of more illustration, and found objects in my new style of painting, while continuing to explore acrylic techniques. My technique is to build a shifting, push/pull background, add collaged elements and illustration and build up layers until a final composition is achieved. The overall purpose behind my work is to create art of beauty and interest.
